A Class 1 license is the highest commercial license available in Alberta. It allows you to operate tractor-trailers (semi-trucks) and any vehicle that falls under Class 3 or Class 5, including dump trucks, flatbeds, and standard passenger vehicles. You’re also approved to drive air brake-equipped vehicles (Q Endorsement) and certain buses without passengers. Whether you’re hauling freight, working in the oilfield, or transporting heavy equipment, Class 1 gives you full access to Alberta’s commercial driving industry.
Our Class 1 program is built around Alberta’s new Learning Pathway, which replaces the old MELT framework and sets a higher, phased standard for commercial driver training. This program includes a minimum of 108 hours of structured instruction, covering online theory, in-yard exercises, in-cab driving, and air brake certification.
By default, completion of the standard 108-hour pathway grants you a provincially restricted Class 1 license, which allows you to operate tractor-trailers within Alberta only. To remove the restriction and gain full unrestricted Class 1 status (valid across Canada), students must complete an additional 17–25 hours of advanced competency development training.
This course is ideal for individuals pursuing a career in:
Long-haul or regional freight transport
Oilfield and construction hauling
Heavy logistics or fleet operations
Cross-province and national carrier roles (with unrestricted certification)
Our instructors focus on real-world readiness, ensuring every graduate is not only licensed but fully prepared for industry standards and employer expectations.
